Is It Important to Check My Engine’s Oil?
Cars have existed for over a hundred years and still rely heavily on engine oil, so it is important to regularly know your vehicle’s oil level. If your Mazda vehicle has a gas-powered engine under the hood, one of the important ways to keep it running well is through not just keeping the oil topped up but also changing it regularly. Below we will review how you can check your engine’s oil from home.
How Do I Check My Engine’s Oil?
- The first step in checking your Mazda‘s engine oil is parking it on a level surface and ensuring the engine is cooled off. Pop the hood and locate the dipstick – it should be an easy-to-spot handle of either bright yellow or orange. The dipstick is housed in a small tube that leads downward and connects to the car’s crankcase, where the engine oil is stored.
- Next, pull the dipstick out and clean it off with a paper towel. A reading from the dipstick when it’s first pulled out is not accurate due to the swishing of the engine when you drive. Re-insert the dipstick.
- When you pull out the dipstick again, you can observe what the level of your oil is. There will be indicators that tell you if your engine oil is too low, too high, or just right. This is the perfect time to observe the color and the consistency of the oil as well. If your oil appears black, thick, gritty, or milky, it might be time for an oil change. Re-insert the dipstick once you’re confident you have the information you need, and close the hood.
