2023 Mazda CX-50 vs. 2022 Nissan Rogue

The newest addition to the sporty and elegant Mazda lineup, the 2023 Mazda CX-50 takes the CX-5 and gives it a more adventurous spirit. Slightly larger than the CX-5 and given an appearance that is fitting of its outdoorsy home, fans of previous Mazda models will find the new style of the CX-50 a different take on the elegant vehicle design the brand is synonymous with. Driving around town or taking the compact SUV out for an off-roading trip around mid-Michigan in the 2023 CX-50 is a quality experience for everyone in the vehicle. Compared to similar vehicles like the 2022 Nissan Rogue, the Mazda showcases its maintained upscale design that adds a sense of welcome luxury to the off-roading vehicle formula.

Performance

Standard equipment on the 2023 Mazda CX-50 is a 2.5L SKYACTIV®-G engine that delivers 186 reliable horsepower. Coupled with its SKYACTIV®-Drive six-speed automatic transmission, every gear shift is remarkably smooth to make the ride as enjoyable as possible. A turbocharged version of the same engine is available and gives the driver 256 horsepower to work with if they desire. The 2022 Nissan Rogue comes equipped with a standard 1.5L turbocharged three-cylinder engine. This results in 201 horsepower and is paired with a Continuously Variable Transmission. A major advantage that the CX-50 comes with is the standard i-Activ AWD system that every version of the compact SUV gets. The Rogue is equipped with standard FWD and has AWD available on select trims of the vehicle.

Interior Features

While the 2023 Mazda CX-50 has been designed to be a more outdoors-centric vehicle option, Mazda has made sure that passengers are greeted with the familiar upscale interior quality that is synonymous with the brand. Compared to the 2022 Rogue, this attention to a superb riding experience is evident. Premium materials are found throughout the cabin to give the atmosphere of the CX-50 interior that quality Mazda feel. The standard air conditioning system is also equipped with a pollen filter to keep the cabin air quality at its best. Similarly, the Rogue is equipped with a microfilter in its standard air conditioning system. Infotainment options are more easily accessible through the standard 8.8-inch screen on the CX-50 compared to the eight-inch version on the Rogue. While both vehicles offer Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, the Mazda offers wireless connectivity to Apple CarPlay on all models. The standard eight-speaker sound system in the Mazda is also far superior to the four-speaker setup in the Nissan Rogue.

Safety Features

Safety and standard driver-assistive features help further solidify the CX-50 as a leader in the crossover SUV market. Not only does the Mazda come with standard AWD handling capabilities, but the vehicle is also equipped with Mazda Smart Cruise Control as a standard feature. Comparatively, the Nissan is only equipped with traditional cruise control as a standard implement. Both SUVs are fitted with systems such as Blind Spot Monitoring and Automatic Emergency Braking as standard features to help keep drivers aware of what is going on around them to make educated safety maneuvers if needed. Knowing that the vehicles have safeguards in place to apply emergency action in cases where the driver can't is a welcome peace of mind as well.
